Oxford, Mississippi has plenty to offer throughout the year. While visitors regularly flock to the area year-round to enjoy its many activities, attractions and special events, those who call the area home can enjoy all that the area has to offer on a regular basis. Whether you are making plans to relocate to Oxford on a permanent basis or are thinking about buying a vacation home in the area, you will always have plenty to do.

Perhaps the most noticeable feature in Oxford is its historic Town Square. Located in the heart of the downtown area, the square boasts charming, historic architecture that you can’t help but pause and admire. There are several  shops and restaurants on the square that invite you to spend time exploring the area in more detail. You can shop for furnishings, antiques, collectibles, vintage clothing, glassware, quilts, art and more on the square.

There are also numerous historical buildings located throughout the Oxford area that you can take a tour of the buildings to learn more about the area’s rich history. The L.Q.C. Lamar House is a historic building that invites you inside to learn about the life of Mississippi statesman Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus Lamar as well as the Civil War era in the Deep South. Rowan Oak is another historic structure that you can tour. This home was constructed in 1848 and was the home to author William Faulkner for many years. You can also tour Cedar Oaks, a Greek Revival structure that was built in 1859 but that was partially destroyed by Union troops in the Civil War. Those who want to explore the history of the area in more detail can tour the Saint Peter’s Cemetery and the Confederate Cemetery, which both date back to the nineteenth century.

In addition to these historic attractions, there are modern attractions located in the area that may appeal to your family. The University Museum on the University of Mississippi campus boasts a range of historic and art exhibits. The Blues Archive is also located on the university campus, and it features collections from B.B. King, Kenneth Goldstein and others. The university’s Archives and Special Collections have manuscripts and collections from William Faulkner and others. You can also check out displays and events at the Center for the Study of Southern Culture, the Powerhouse Community Arts & Cultural Center, and the Ford Center for the Performing Arts as well as other venues.
